There’s only one problem: not a single person can find you on Google yet.

Sure, you might have told your friends, family, and some co-workers. Maybe they even shared the domain name on Facebook for you. However, that can only get you so far.

Without having your website indexed by the major search engines, your site doesn’t stand a chance of being found online.

By the time you finish reading this post, you’ll know exactly how to submit your site to Google and will be ready to start driving traffic to your site.

Google Search Console

The best way to submit your site to Google is through Google Search Console. (Not too long ago, this used to be called Google Webmaster Tools.)

Before getting started, you’ll need to have a Google account, so be sure to create one before going any further.

Once you have an account with Google, head over to Google Search Console and sign in.

After you’re in, type your domain name into the search bar provided and hit the red “add property” button.

Next, you need to verify that you actually own the site.

Google allows you to do any of the following to verify your ownership:

  1. Upload an HTML file to your site
  2. Add a meta tag to your site’s home page
  3. Sign in to your domain name provider
  4. Use your Google Analytics Account
  5. Use your Google Tag Manager account

After your site is verified, you will have a plethora of information available to you.

You can review messages Google sends you, analyze your site appearance, see if anyone linked to your site, and a whole lot more.

Most importantly, you can submit your site to Google. To do this, find the tab on the left side of the screen that reads “Crawl” and click on it.

Choose “Fetch as Google” from the drop-down options.

Submit Your Site to Google With Fetch

To submit your home page to Google, do not add anything to the search bar that appears to the right of your URL and hit the red “Fetch” button or the red “Fetch and Render” button. The main difference between the two is that “Fetch and Render” let’s you see how Googlebot sees your page.

After choosing one or the other, click the grey “submit to index” button in the fourth column of the table.

A pop up screen will appear and ask you whether you want to crawl only the URL you provided or the URL and all of its direct links.

Since this is your first official submission to Google, go ahead and select “Crawl this URL and its direct links.”

After doing so, the button that originally read “submit to index” should now say “URL and linked pages submitted to index.”

Congratulations! You officially submitted your site to Google!

Submit Your Sitemap

It’s a good idea to also submit your XML sitemap to Google.

To do this, go back to the tab on the left side of the screen that reads “Crawl” and click on it. This time, choose Sitemaps from the drop-down options.

Click the red “Add/Test Sitemap” button and input the URL of your XML sitemap.

Once submitted, Google will begin indexing every page in your sitemap.
